‘Dearah Association for Social and Humanitarian Action’ alias ASHA NGO has been formed as as result of a fruitful sharing among the like – minded people on the situation bringing gaps between the ‘Rights holders’ and ‘Duty bearers’ and compelling people of the marginalized sections to live as quashi – citizen particularly in the rural areas where lies the ‘root cause’ of the issue whereas its ‘manifestation’ is seen in the urban ones. This fruitful sharing takes a legal shape on the 17th of September, 2007 being registered under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act, 1961.  

ASHA NGO being a registered non – profit organization is also registered under the different other Acts and Bodies in India viz. Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010;  NITI Aayog (NGO Darpan), Income Tax Act, 1961 U/s 12AA & 80G and the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India.

ASHA NGO has been working in the bordering blocks along the Indo – Bangladesh border and the deltaic region of the Sundarban in the district of North 24 Parganas, West Bengal; however, the organization has experience of work in some other parts of West Bengal and those of Assam and Chhattisgarh as well and focusing on the issues affecting adolescent children (majority of girls) and women the most; such as Child protection and Prevention of Trafficking, Child marriage, Child labour, Gender based Violence, Unsafe migration.

Following the Rights Based Approach ASHA NGO has always been involving community people, local stakeholders and government officials to address the issue through and interface between the Community people (Rights holders) and the Government officials (Duty bearers) in order to minimize the gaps between both the bodies and to ensure the success the organization has undertaken a number of activities for the empowerment of the community people including children. 

   

ASHA NGO has played a crucial role in formation of the Block Level Child Protection Committee (BLCPC) and the Village Level Child Protection (VLCPC) in compliance with the guidance issued by the Department of the Women & Child Development, Government of West Bengal in its respective project locations in the jurisdiction of the Basirhat Police District and serve as a Member in these committees and also in others viz. District Task Force for ‘One Stop Centre’ for Victims of Domestic Violence, North 24 Parganas, District Vigilance Committee on Bonded Labour, North 24 Parganas, Vigilance Committee on the Atrocities on SCs & STs, Bidhannagar Sub – division, Service Provider under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005.

The organization has also been selected as a Master Trainer on Child Protection Mechanism by the District Child Protection unit (DCPU), North 24 Parganas and its work is well recognized by the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, West Bengal (SCPCR). 

ASHA NGO has implemented projects on the issue of Child Protection & Prevention of Trafficking with the support of the Aangan Trust, Mumbai, Action Aid India, Kolkata, the British Deputy High Commission, Kolkata and at present the Aangan Trust continues to extend its support for the like project. Apart from this, the organization is implementing the projects on Preventive Healthcare and Nutrition Smart Community being supported by German Doctors, Bonn, Germany and Welthungerhilfe, Bonn, Germany respectively. 

ASHA NGO conducts a number of activities like Development of TLMs and Advocacy tools, Theatre workshops, Awareness Generation Programme, Safety Session on Child Protection, Community Help Desk, Financial planning & Budgeting, Training & Workshops on ARSH & RCH and Preventive Healthcare, Community Clinic, Research & publications.

  1. To generate awareness on the luring factors for child trafficking;
  2. To provide the community with basic legal literacy on the local issues;
  3. To promote and protect the rights of children in tune with the UNCRC;
  4. To empower the youths towards being THE CHANGE AGENTS;
  5. To provide Socio-Legal counseling to the victims of domestic violence;
