Our Story

ASHA NGO

Mr. Sanjeev Kumar Singh, Founder and Secretary of the organization, holds a Master’s Degree in Human Rights from the Indian Institute of Human Rights, New Delhi. Having worked with several organizations in the development sector, he closely observed the persistent gaps between rights holders and duty bearers, which often prevented marginalized communities from accessing their entitlements and living with dignity. Motivated by these realities, he envisioned an organization dedicated to empowering disadvantaged populations who were often excluded from mainstream development processes.

Recognizing that many social issues originate in rural areas before manifesting in urban settings, he chose to focus the organization’s work in rural communities. He was particularly concerned about the deep-rooted challenges of caste-based discrimination and social exclusion, which disproportionately affected lower-caste groups and minority communities.

His experience highlighted the need to empower these vulnerable populations through social action, awareness-building, and advocacy so that they could identify their rights, voice their concerns, and engage effectively with government institutions to address their issues.

Sharing this vision with like-minded social workers and philanthropists, he received strong support and commitment from individuals who agreed to join the initiative. Their collective efforts culminated in the formal establishment of the organization, which was registered under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act, 1961, on 17 September 2007.

President Message

Dear Friends,

Since ASHA NGO’s formation in 2007, we have been dedicated to uplifting marginalized communities, focusing on the protection and rights of children and women. Our mission is to bridge the gap between rights holders and duty bearers, ensuring that vulnerable populations are heard and supported. Working across the Indo-Bangladesh border and the Sundarbans, our initiatives combat child marriage, trafficking, gender-based violence, and malnutrition, while promoting child protection, preventive healthcare, and women’s empowerment. Collaboration with local stakeholders, government bodies, and international partners strengthens our efforts in driving positive change. We remain committed to creating a future where every individual, especially in rural and underserved areas, can lead a life of dignity, safety, and opportunity.
